Crippen Regional Park offers a network of easily accessible trails that meander through lush green landscapes and present a variety of scenic vistas to enjoy. Not only will your eyes marvel over all the different shades of forest green, your other senses will be engaged by woodsy fragrances, quiet sounds of nature and feelings of relaxation as you breathe oxygen-rich fresh air. Your guide will lead you to Killarney Lake where you can relax, continue on your own walk around the lake, or return with the guide to Snug Cove.  This walk is a great introduction to Bowen Island’s flora and fauna. It is structured to be accessible for most people, with a relaxed walking pace, and it will provide you with an opportunity to experience the simple beauty and pleasures of being in a temperate rainforest.

Things you should know:

  • Please wear good walking shoes, such as runners, as you will be walking on mixed and uneven surfaces, trails with roots, rocks, and potentially other tripping hazards.
  • Tours run rain or shine so please wear appropriate clothing. It is really quite lovely to walk in a forest when it is raining, as long as you are dressed for it.
  • Please bring water and a snack/picnic with you as these are not available at the lake. There are stores and restaurants in Snug Cove if you wish to purchase food and drinks prior to the walk.
  • This tour starts in Snug Cove but ends at Killarney Lake. You will be given directions to make your way back to the starting point or you can walk back with the guide.
  • Please note: the distance of this walk may be challenging for young children. A stroller with large off-road wheels can be used on the trails to Killarney Lake but not on the trail around the lake.

Half-day walk on Bowen

“Lovely half day hiking with Jody and a small group of like-minded ladies. Jody was really knowledgeable regarding Bowen history and habitat, and the walk was fab through shady fir trees, with lots of laughter too along the way. Xenia was a welcome stop half way for a picnic lunch…..a great day, to be recommended. Thanks Jody – great to meet you.” Jan, England

Fantastic day spent on naturally beautiful Bowen Island

“I had the pleasure of spending the day last Sunday enjoying a walking tour of Bowen Island. We walked a series of trials up to Killarney Lake and visited Xenia’s Island Retreat. Jody shared interesting information about the flora and fauna we encountered as well as the history of the island. We covered 12 kilometres and many topics of discussion. It was a great day with new and old friends! Thanks Jody!” Julie, Canada

Immerse yourself in a “forest bath” and allow nature to soothe and revitalize. This forest trek to Xenia Island Retreat provides an opportunity to unwind, unplug and to just be. On our journey to one of the oldest homesteads on the island, we will be surrounded by Bowen’s lush temperate rainforest, woodsy fragrances, fresh air and the quiet sounds of nature. Xenia, meaning hospitality in Greek, is a rustic peaceful sanctuary, a welcoming retreat where visitors are invited to connect with the environment, with oneself and with others. We will spend approximately one hour exploring and appreciating some of Xenia’s treasures, including Opa, a 1,000-year-old giant Douglas Fir tree, an eleven-circuit stone labyrinth, and a meditation sanctuary for those who wish quiet reflection. We will rest, have time for a packed lunch, and simply enjoy the natural ambience of Xenia. On our return to Snug Cove, we will complete our circumference of Killarney Lake, one of Bowen’s most popular destinations.

Like all of Bowen Island Tours nature walks, this trek to Xenia is informed by the principles of Shinrin-yoku, a Japanese practice and term that loosely translates to forest bathing. Since the 1980s, many studies have documented the physiological and psychological benefits associated with Shinrin-yoku, such as reductions in stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, cardio-vascular disease and others.

If you are interested in this walk but don’t see a date listed that suits your schedule, please contact us as other dates may be available. We welcome inquires for private, group and corporate retreats. For further information about Xenia Centre, including programs, retreats and venue rentals for weddings and special events, please visit their website: xeniacentre.com
